He was the elder of two sons, his family had spent their life savings on his studies in London — a year-long English language course, which he had successfully completed, and a master’s degree in architecture. The English course cost $7,000 (£3,500) and the master’s cost £9,200. It took Tu’s parent all their life saving to save up this money — more than 30 years of savings.
